The following news reports are about Colorado whitewater adventure on the Upper Arkansas River in Colorado.
While music is central to Vertex, which takes place Friday-Sunday in Buena Vista, the organizers – Madison House Presents and AEG Live Rocky Mountains – have created a festival that encourages music fans to get a taste of the local community and surrounding landscape.
Musical acts are scheduled for afternoons and evenings, so mornings offer time to explore other opportunities, and the festival organizers are making it easy for attendees to raft the river, hike a mountain trail, play a round of disc golf or stroll the streets of downtown Buena Vista.
Don Strasburg, co-president of AEG Live Rocky Mountains, said a passion for Colorado and music motivated the producers to organize Vertex, and “field trips …
Read More on The Mountain MailNational Monument status for Browns Canyon in Colorado's Arkansas River Valley was a dream in the hearts and minds of many. About ten years ago, local citizens in Salida, Colorado, members of the Arkansas River Outfitters Association (AROA) and the whitewater community began working with state lawmakers to protect this area of public land. Their hard work paid off - Browns Canyon was designated a National Monument in February 2015. This area of 22,000 acres is jointly managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and U.S. Forest Service in cooperation with the Colorado Parks and Wildlife through the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA).
"It is so exciting to see Browns Canyon designated to ensure the area will …
Read MoreOver the past weekend, I worked my way up I-70 and the right down the Arkansas River. Under the guidance of a particular Colorado dreamboat, a raft guide I know from my days as a ski instructor, was kind enough to take me down the river his day off. I am not a professional rafter and have only been rafting five times in my life, which I am told for a Colorado native is very low and I promise to work on my time dedication to the river. The scouts then used their rafting skills to battle on Royal Gorge on the second day. Parts of both rafting excursions included Class 3, 4, and 5 rapids with Royal Gorge being more …
Read MoreWhen Dennis Wied first moved to Colorado more than 30 years ago, it never occurred to him to go rafting. But after a girlfriend asked him to go, "My response was, 'Yeah, sure. That sounds like fun,'" he said.
Today, 34 years after that first trip, rafting is how he makes his living.
As the owner of Raft Masters, Wied has one location in Cañon City and another in Idaho Springs. On a regular basis, he sees rafters from all over the country.
His local location, 2315 E. Main St., is one of 10 rafting outfitters in Cañon City. Because the area generally has warm weather and a variety of water conditions along the Arkansas River, it has been a popular rafting destination for years.
"People …
